| Umi
was merely a waitress until she came upon a mysterious cave with
an bright orange rock. She is soon terrorized by creatures known
as "nocturnals" who want the rock she has gained unwillingly
from the cave. Through Salem help, Umi learns about nocturnals and
how to control her new found power in order to protect her friends
and family after Rian is murdered. She soon finds herself falling
for Salem before she finds out he's a nocturnal, and then feels
betrayed after Salem has to use his nocturnal powers to save Anna.
Umi feels she's been working with the enemy who's out to kill her.
Salem tells her that he only wants to help with nothing in return
and that he won't let her die. Umi begins to fall for him again
and hopes that she can get him to open up about himself, since he
knows almost everything about her. When Bakari arrives, Umi learns
more about the nocturnals, the rock of Eihwaz, whose after her,
and about Salem's past. |

lost his parents many years ago to powerful one of his kind and
was saved by Bakkari, who is only friend. Since then he has vowed
to never take another nocturnal creature's life, even to spare his
own. Because of this, Salem is a very weak creature and is almost
more human than nocturnal. Like other nocturnals, he is drawn to
Umi because of the energy emitting from the rock she possesses.
Salem decides to help Umi because he feels that if another nocturnal
gains the power of the rock that there will be great danger. He
soon finds himself liking Umi as more than a friend, but finds it
hard to say or do anything because he's been pretty much alone for
most of his life. |

doesn't mind as long as he is good to Umi. In fact, she encourages
Salem to tell Umi before she accidently finds out the night of the

is Umi's childhood friend and although both girls are outgoing,
Genki has the sly, tom-boyish personality. At first she is completely
oblivious to the antics going on surrounding her friend, but soon

restaurant on a very busy night. As the story progresses, Genki
helps Umi in her fight against the nocturnals and find herself semi-drawn
to Bakkari, who's power, exoticness, and charm fascinate her. |

is an old high school friend of Umi and Genki's who returns to Japan
from his four year stay in America. He begins working at the restaurant
to earn enough money to begin his own design business. Umi's old
feelings for him resurface after he starts working at the restaurant.
Eventually, Umi finds out that he has feelings for her as well,
but the words come too late as Rian tries to protect Umi and gets
killed by a nocturnal. It is after this event that Umi decides to
defeat the nocturnals and get her life back. |

Swahili for
"one with great promise" is what defines Bakari, the
name and the character. Bakari was born to be the next ruler of
his village and when the time came he reluctantly preformed the
ritual of taking his mother and father into himself (taking their
hearts, the source of nocturnal's power). He became uncontrolablly
corrupted and angered after this event in which he ended up killing
almost his whole village and many other nocturnals across the
world. Bakari became one of the most powerful nocturnals in the
world. He was eventually calmed by a Chinese woman named Xiao
who showed him that he didn't have to be evil to be powerful.
Xiao was killed by Amano and Bakari nearly killed him but stopped
just short of doing so resulting in the wound across the bridge
of his nose as Amano struck back and got away.
Now Bakari
is peaceful and doesn't like to use his power unless forced to.
He helped Salem escape death by the hands of a forceful nocturnal
after it killed Salem's parents. He aided Salem in taking the
heart of his mother and father as well, as a rememberence. Since
then, Bakari became Salem's friend and mentor. He was coming to
visit Salem when he finds out about Umi and the rock. It is Bakari
who tells Umi what she wants to know about the noctunals and the
story of the rock in her possession, because he too at one point
search for it.

Mah and
Mei's parents were casulaties killed by riots in their village
when they were very young. A old martial artist took the children
in and taught them everything he knew, but when he passed away,
they were left alone again. They saw Rutger defeat a nocturnal
in a backally and were fascinated. Rutger noticed them and almost
killed them, but the twins fought him back and in the process
woke up their dormant nocturnal power. Rutger saw them as a
possible asset to his venture and promised them that when the
rock of Eihwaz was found part of it's power would belong to
them. The twins agreed and have been loyal to him ever since,
awaiting the moment when eternal strength and revenge of their
parent's death will be theirs.
